STEP into Programs

Arts & Science students:

Are you:

  • Trying to decide on a Program of Study (subject POSt)?
  • Thinking of switching programs?

We want to help you plan your next steps!

The information below is a new online tool filled with student and alumni advice about Arts & Science programs, and about the process of choosing which program or programs to complete. Look for the Speech Bubble Icon symbol to read the experiences and advice of other students.

All about Programs of Study

Overview of Arts & Science Requirements

Programs in the Faculty of Arts & Science, often referred to as POSts (Programs Of Study) are set up so that you can choose to develop significant expertise in a single area (through a specialist program) OR combine your interests with a combination of programs – up to 3 specialists, majors and minors.

This FAStanswers video from the Faculty of Arts & Science Registrar responds to Your Questions about Subject POSts

To complete the degree requirements for an Honours BA or BSc in the Faculty of Arts & Science, you must complete, at a minimum and in addition to other degree requirements, either:

  • One specialist program
  • Two majors
  • One major and two minors

Any of these combinations leads to an Honours degree.

If you wish, you can complete more than this minimum. Many students add a minor program to their specialist or their two majors. You can complete any combination of two programs, and up to three programs if at least one is a minor (some students even complete two specialists). But there is no expectation that you will complete more than the minimum program requirements.

The calendar contains more details about program and degree requirements.

Enrolling in your selected Subject POSts
Information on how and when to enroll in Subject POSts available on the Faculty of Arts & Science Current Students website.

If you have any questions about Subject POSt enrollment, please check with your College Registrar. Your College might also hold workshops or information sessions about Subject POSt enrollment in the spring.

Why programs?

Your program or programs of study are intended to enrich your learning in at least two ways:

  1. Build expertise in an area of study so that you can think deeply and critically about the topic and conduct rigourous work in that area of study.
  2. Practice skills that are essential to any area of study, but which you can learn and apply most deeply and meaningfully within your program of study. Every program in the Faculty of Arts & Science helps students develop the following skills, so by completing program requirements, you will practice each of these competencies. These are:
  • Critical and Creative Thinking
  • Communication
  • Information Literacy
  • Quantitative Reasoning
  • Social and Ethical Responsibility

When we talk about the transferable skills developed through an Arts & Science education, we are referring, at least in part, to these competencies.

Some things to consider in choosing programs

What students say

  1. Be open-minded in choosing courses and programs
  2. Study what interests you
  3. Don’t worry if you change your mind – have a Plan B
  4. Choose programs and courses that will help you connect and apply your interests and build skills
  5. Take advantage of opportunities available to you in your program
  6. Learn about what a program offers before making a decision
  7. Find a community - through your program or elsewhere
Choosing which types of program to complete

Why choose a specialist program?

What students say
  • Specialist programs can be an asset when applying to research-based graduate programs
  • Specialist programs give you the opportunity to explore broadly and deeply within a single area of study
  • If you really enjoy studying a particular subject, and want to focus most of your energy in that area

Why choose two majors?

  • You have interests that span more than one program or field
  • You want to build a profile that combines different areas of expertise, skills, or approaches to learning
  • You want to build expertise in an interdisciplinary or thematic area

Why choose a major and two minors?

What students say
  • You want to build a diverse academic record
  • Programs are listed on your transcript and easy to include on a resume, and so can be a great way to communicate your interest in or commitment to a particular field of study
  • Enrollment in a program can give you priority registration for some courses in that field, giving you a better chance of getting into in-demand courses
  • You’ve already taken a few courses in a particular field, and want to continue your studies in that area
  • You can build skills or enhance your perspective in an additional area

Making the most of your combination of programs

What students say Combining programs can allow you to build a unique profile that highlights your personal interests and reflects diverse or interdisciplinary interests. For example, you can:

  • Combine particular skills applicable to lots of potential jobs (e.g. strong critical thinking and writing skills in a humanities field like history) with a particular thematic focus in a second program (like Geology) – this combination might, for example, prepare you to work as a journalist focusing on environmental issues.
  • Explore different facets of a particular field or topic for a thematic, interdisciplinary focus to your degree
  • Add a language, which can prepare you to work with particular communities or in particular regions
  • Add a regional focus to your studies (e.g., combing Political Science with African Studies)
  • Demonstrate that you are someone with wide interests and the capacity to connect diverse ideas and think creatively (e.g. by combining Philosophy and Economics)
Not happy with your choice of program?

You can change programs after first year

Nearly all POSts offer an opportunity to enroll in second- or upper-years.

These POSt admission requirements will be different (and sometimes more restrictive) than admission at the end of first year.

Review the requirements in the calendar, and make sure that you are completing any required courses in second year. You should also meet with your College Registrar to consider how your plans to change programs can fit into your overall degree progress and plan.

Consider changing your program type (specialist/major/minor)

For example, you might:

  • Switch from a major to a specialist
  • Switch from a specialist to a major or minor and add an additional program to build your interests and skills in a distinct or related area
Help with exploring programs
  • College Registrar
    • Your College Registrar is an excellent resource for information or advice about exploring and selecting programs. Schedule an appointment with an academic advisor in your College Registrar’s office, and bring a list of programs or topics you’re interested in, classes you’ve enjoyed, or post-university goals.
  • Current students: Subject POSt Enrollment
    • Details about processes for enrolling in or applying to programs; important dates and links to key information.
  • Degree explorer allows you to:
    • Determine which program and degree requirements you have fulfilled
    • Plan potential schedules for future semesters
    • Explore how completed and planned courses map on to your current or potential Subject POSt requirements
  • Calendar
    • The calendar includes details about all programs, including admission requirements, and all courses associated with that academic unit.
  • Career Centre
    • The Career Centre offers workshops and resources to help you explore potential professional pathways and develop career skills, and to explore links between career exploration and your academic experience.
Making the most of Program Expo

Every spring, units across the Faculty meet with students to answer questions and provide information. Read more about the Plan your Program Expo

  • Make a list of questions that are important to you in advance; bring that list with you to help you start conversations and get relevant information about the programs you’re interested in!
  • Check out departmental online resources for information on program and course offerings or requirements prior to the Program Expo so that you have your questions ready.
  • Give yourself time to get all of the information you need from multiple locations across campus.
  • Ask lots of questions!
  • Find faculty members and other students at the Program Expo locations.
  • Visit the booths of the first-year courses which you took (or really wish you did), loved, and did reasonably well in.
  • Don’t choose programs only because you believe they would have better career opportunities, or because your parents want to you take them.
  • Visit as many departments as you can to get multiple perspectives.
  • Ask as many questions as you need to ask! There is no such thing as a dumb question.
  • Do visit as many programs as you can, we offer a diverse range of programs, go discover them!
  • If you can’t make it, check column of contact information or http://www.artsci.utoronto.ca/current/advising/departments for contacts for each program office

Information about each program

Talking to current students and alumni is a great way to learn more about a program. With the help of the Arts & Science Student Union, Associate Chairs and undergraduate administrative staff in programs, the Faculty of Arts & Science Alumni Relations Office, and the Office of the Faculty Registrar, we have collected some of this advice to help you explore programs and pathways.

We asked current students to tell us about their favourite courses in a program, and why those courses had such an impact on them. We also asked current students and alumni to tell us about their programs – why they chose them, what they’ve learned, and what advice they have for students considering programs.
We encourage you to use this information as a starting point – once you’ve identified several programs you think you might be interested in, you can:

  • Talk to an academic advisor in your College Registrar’s office
  • Contact the program with questions (see the table below for contact information)
  • Contact the Course Union to speak with current students in the program
  • Use the calendar and Degree Explorer to learn more about program courses and requirements
